Introduction

This whelming journey takes you to the base of the world’s highest mountain with a magnificent view of Mt. Everest. The Everest Base Camp trail progresses along with beautiful, brave climber memorials, Sherpa villages, and glaciers. Surely, an adventure enthusiast would never want to miss. This glimpse of the world’s highest peak will certainly be an eye-pleasing sight.

The Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lake Trek starts from one of the epic airports ‘Tenzing Hillary Airport-Lukla Airport’.  It was built in 1964 and is elevated at 2,860 mt/9,383 ft. As soon as you step off the plane, you will witness the mighty snow-capped Himalayas and the diverse geography. This 2-week voyage will follow the same path ‘Sr. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’ used.

Crossing several sparse settlements of the Himalayas and Sherpa community, beautifully paved paths, and chorten along the way, you will have an amazing experience. The trail follows ‘Dhudh Koshi’ which literally means Milk and the color of the river is whitish. Another major attraction ‘Namache Bazaar’ also known as the city without a vehicle will astonish you. As it is the most amazing mountain settlement.

You also can enjoy the night view of the Bazaar within a few minute hike at night. And be prepared to see the snow-capped mountain every morning. The path is more commercialized as it boasts a healthy number of visitors every year. So even if you forget to purchase things in Kathmandu you will be able to get them in Namache. On the fourth day of the trek, embrace yourself with the Buddhist mantras inside the oldest monastery ‘Tengboche Monastery’. Built in 1916 Lama Gulu sits just below the lap of the mighty Himalayas.

A few gazing points such as Kalapathar (5,545 mt/18,192 ft), and Nangkartshang 5,090 mt/16,699 ft) are the highest point of this trail.  These viewpoints offer never forgetting and jaw-dropping panoramic views of Mount Everest up close just in front of your sight. Mostly, you pass through the Sagarmatha National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. And a refuge for musk deer, snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, black bears, and many spectacular types of iridescent pheasant. So you can encounter a lot of wildlife too! On this journey to Everest Base Camp (5,545 mt/18,192 ft), the view of the Himalayas; Thamserku (6,608 mt/21,680 ft), Kangtega (6,788 mt/ 22,251 ft), and Ama Dablam (6,812 mt/22,389 ft) does not fail to amaze you.

  • Day 03: Fly to Lukla, and trek to Phakding

    Lukla: (2,850m/9,350 ft) Phakding: (2,650 m/ 8,562 ft)

An early morning breathtaking Himalayan flight to Lukla. After the flight of about 40 minutes, we will spend about an hour in Lukla and feel the drastic change in the weather from Kathmandu to there. This will help us to cope with the weather there and be ready for the real adventure.

Then, our porters will carry our belongings and we will start our trekking to Phakding for 3 to 4 hours. We can see many mountain ranges on our way including Mt. Khumbila, a sacred mountain that has never been climbed. After reaching Phakding, we can already find our luggage there.

  • Day 04: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar

    Phakding: (2,650 m/ 8,562 ft) Monjo: (2,835m/9,301 ft) Namche Bazaar: (3,440m/11,285 ft)

Today we will trek for about 6 to 7 hours to Namche Bazaar, a place which is also known as the gateway to Everest. We will walk along the bank of Dudh Koshi River and reach Bengkar in around an hour. We can see the first view of Mt. Thamserku (6,623m), another local divinity. From Bengkar, the walk continues through a long suspension bridge, and then through a beautiful pine forest to Monjo. Soon thereafter, we will approach the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park for a brief permit check and then descend to Dudh Koshi River.

We reach Jorsale(2,740 m.), a small village that lies on the west side of the Dudh Koshi river, just north of Monjo and south of Namche Bazaar. Jorsale is also the last settlement before Namche, so after this village, there is a continuous tough walk of around 2 hours before we finally reach Namche.

  • Day 05: Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar

Namche (3,440m/11,285 ft) Everest View Hotel: (3,962m/12,998 ft)

To adjust to high altitude and to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness in the further trial, acclimatization is required. After trekking for two days, we will take a rest at Namche for a day. We will acclimatize ourselves in this largest Sherpa village of Nepal. First, we will visit Sagarmatha National Park and if the weather is clear we can see the first glimpse of Everest.

We will hike for two hours to Everest View Point and Khumjung Valley and also visit Sherpa Museum and explore Sherpa culture and the history of mountaineering. Have lunch in Khumjung Valley. Furthermore, we will also visit Syangboche Airport, which is the highest airport in Nepal. Rest of the day we can visit the town and go to cafes, shops, and restaurants.

  • Day 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Deboche

Namche (3,440m/11,285 ft) Phunki Tenga: 3,312m/10,866 ft) Debuche: (3,740m/12,270 ft)

After breakfast, we will resume our trek towards Deboche Village. Deboche is a monastic settlement established by Lama Gulu for the benefits of a nun. Doboche and Tengboche, 3867m, are the alternatives to each other for today’s destination. But we prefer Deboche as it is located at less altitude and the forest here is much denser.

While walking for about 2 hours before we reach Kyangjuma, the gentle flat path is built by Pasang Sherpa, also known as Lama Seru. Lama Seru has been actively constructing trails beyond Namche leading up to the foothill of Everest. We will see many different mountains like Thamseku, Amadablam, Lhotse, and Everest and cross beautiful stupas and manes. Walking downhill towards Dudhkoshi River, we reach Phunki Tenga (3,312m) and Juniper forest. This is the place for us for refreshment and having lunch. After spending some time here, you will start walking again.

We will resume our trek, crossing the suspension bridge with the view of Imja River which is separating from Dudhkoshi River. We will walk continuously for 2 hours uphill to reach Tengboche. As the altitude increases, we have to drink water every hour. Tengboche is one of the most beautiful villages in the Everest region which contains Tengboche Monastery established by Lama Gulu with strong links to its mother monastery known as the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet.

Tengboche village may be overcrowded during the peak season of trekking; hence we head towards Deboche just 15 minutes smooth downhill. During the period of today’s trek we must drink enough water and continue moving slowly, the trail gives us a magnificent view of towering big mountains just in front of our eyes.

  • Day 07: Trek from Deboche to Dingboche

Debuche: (3,740m/12,270 ft) Somare: (4,060m/13,320 ft) Dingboche: (4,360m/14,290ft)

Today’s journey continues with a trek through the Rhododendron forest and several villages across the path. We will walk for 45 minutes inside Juniper forest to reach Imja River. Continuing our walk leads us to Pangboche village (3,950m). We can visit Pangboche School built by Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust. Continuing our walk for one and half hrs, we will reach Somare (4,060m). This is the place where the tree line finishes. We will stop by here for lunch.

After spending a few times there, continue to walk to reach Orsho, a place where Everest disappears and is covered by the Lhotse-Nuptse wall. We continued our trek to the Imja Valley and Lobuche River before ascending to Dingboche for about an hour trek. We must drink enough water and continue moving slowly, the trail gives us a magnificent view of towering big mountains just in front of our eyes.

  • Day 08: Acclimatization day in Dingboche

    Nangkartshang: (5,085m/16,683 ft)

Another rest/acclimatization day at Dingboche is very important as it will help everyone to cope with its high altitude and cold environment. During this time we can explore Dingboche and the surrounding valleys of Chhukung and Imja. We can also do a day hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5085m) from where we can see Mt. Makalu (8,485m), the 5th highest mountain in the world along with different faces Amadablam, Kangtega (6,685m), and Cholatse (6,440m).

With the exploration of amazing views and scenic beauty, we will again explore Dingboche village in the evening time and rest there overnight.

  • Day 09: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche

Dingboche: (4,360m/14,290ft) Dhugla: (4,620m/15,157 ft) Lobuche: (4,930m/16,175 ft)

Due to the higher altitude, this trek will be more difficult in comparison to previous days. We will walk in the alpine region where there are no forests and just above Periche village to reach Thukla (also known as Dukhla) 4,615m. Finally, we reach Thukla after crossing Khumbu Glacier and walking for around 3 hours. Short break here and feel your energy and again continue to walk and climb Thukla pass for 1an hour. This is the place where memorial stupas are built dedicated to the climbers and trekkers who failed to return from Everest over the years.

We reach Lobuche in an hour and a half. This trail of a total of 6 to 7 hours is slightly difficult as well, but the breathtaking view of the mountains will keep us motivated and it will feel like we reached Lobuche in no time. We feel completely different as we are staying nearly 5,000m above sea level. We must drink water again and again to help ourselves. From Lobuche, we can see mountains like Lobuche Peak (6,119m), Pumori (7,138m), Nuptse (7,661m), and many others small mountains. But from the place where there are most of the lodges, we cannot see any of those.

  • Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorakshep

Gorakshep: (5,185m/ 17,010 ft) Everest Base Camp: (5,364m/17,598ft)

The biggest day of our trek will lead us towards Everest Base Camp. Comparatively easier at the beginning, the trek will be harder after we reach Gorak Shep. Here we have to ascend and descend mostly on glacier paths and hard rocks. After 1 and half hours, we will see the first view of Kalapatthar (black rock mountain) along with other mountains such as Pumori (7,138m), Nuptse (7,861m), Lingtren (6,749m). We will reach Gorak Shep in about 3 hours of walk. Short break at Gorak shep and we will feel the energy, keep your backpack there, and head towards EBC.

Drink enough water while walking. On our way, we will approach Khumbu Glacier, the highest glacier in the world and the largest of Nepal. After nearly 3 hours of hiking on a straight trail, yet dangerous, we will finally reach the basecamp.

When we reach the base camp all the exhaustion of a week trek will be lost as its beauty will make you feel like in heaven. We can enjoy amazing views of Nuptse (7,861m), Khumbuste (6,665m), and Pumori (7,136m) mountains from the base camp. After spending some time there we will head back to Gorak shep where we will spend the night.

  • Day 11: Hike to Kala Patthar (5,555m/18,208ft)-viewpoint, trek back to Dzongla

    Kala Patthar: (5,555m/18,208ft) Dzongla: (4,830m/15,846ft)

Kalapathar is the highest point of altitude that we will trek. As Mt. Everest cannot be seen from basecamp, Kalapathar is the best viewpoint where we can see Everest just in front of our eyes. We will head towards there before dawn, the weather will be freezing and we have to wear warm clothes along with a light attached to our head. After 2 hours trek in the dark, we will finally reach Kalapathar. From the best viewpoint of our trek, we can see 360 degrees of mountains like Khumbutse (6,665m) Pomori (7,136m), Lingtren (6,749m), Lhotse (8,516m), Nuptse (7,861m), Amadablam (6,814m) and highest of them all Everest (8,848.86m). After spending a few minutes there, we will head back towards Gorak Shep for breakfast.

From Gorakshep, we will decline down to Lobuche to reach Dzongla. Lobuche to Dzongla is a short trek; walk through a grassy trail while enjoying the view of Lobuche Peak. Walking the same EBC route, until we reach the top of Thukla pass then we will approach Dzongla. Within 2 and half hours from Lobuche, we will reach Dzongla.

  • Day 12: Trek from Dzongla to Thagnak via Cho La Pass

    Dzongla: (4,830m/15,846ft) Cho La Pass: (5,360m/ 17,585 ft) Thagnak: (4,700m/ 15,420 ft)

Another difficult day of our trek, today we will cross the pass which connects Khumbu and Gokyo village of Everest region. With a total trek of 7 hours today, we will rest at Thagnak after crossing Cho La. Cho La is also the best for great peak views; Kyanjo Ri (6,186m), Tangi Ragi Tau (6,186m), Chola (6,089m), Lobuche West (6,145m), Nuptse (7,861m), Lobuche (6,119m) along with Everest (8,848.86m).

We descend our altitude, from the height of Cho la to reach Thagnak with a walk of 2 and half hours. Don’t forget to drink water every hour. Thagnak is a perfect rest place for the people who just crossed the great pass and are planning to move further the next day.

  • Day 13: Trek from Thagnak to Gokyo Lake

Thagnak: (4,700m/ 15,420 ft) Gokyo Lake: (4,998m/16,400 ft)

After the difficult trek of the earlier day, today we will do a short and comparatively easy trek. With less than 4 hours of trek, we will head towards the place which is one of the most facilitated settlements of the Everest region.

  • Day 14: Hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357 mt/17,575 ft)

Gokyo Lake: (4,998m/16,400 ft) Gokyo Ri: (5,357m/ 17,575 ft)

Today is the main highlight of our trek. We will hike up to Gokyo Ri or Gokyo peak which will take about 3 to 4 hours. We walked uphill to see Gokyo lake from a bird’s eye view. After reaching the peak, we feel like we are surrounded by the ranges of the Himalayas. We can enjoy the view of Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) along with other peaks, Thamserku (6,623m), Kangtega (6,782m), Taboche (6,542m), Cholatse (6,440m), Nuptse (7,861m), Changtse (7,543m), and Pumori (7,161m).

After spending time there we will return back to the valley for an overnight stay. Today is the last day of our uphill trek as we will continue to move downwards to return from where we started.

  • Day 15: Trek from Gokyo to Dole

    Gokyo: (4,998m/ 16,400 ft) Machhermo: (4,470m/ 14,665 ft) Dole: (4,038m/ 13,248 ft)

Walking downwards and decreasing altitude is easier than walking uphill. Therefore, we can skip some places and reach the next destination in no time. Here, we will directly move towards Dole which will take us around 5 to 6 hours, skipping Machhermo where we stayed overnight in the reverse trek.

We can yet again enjoy the eye-appealing Himalayas and admire the beautiful villages that pass by. We will stop by Machhermo for lunch and spend some time there. Continuous walk for another 3 hours takes us to Dole.

  • Day 16: Trek from Dole to Monjo

    Dole: (4,038m/ 13,248 ft) Namche: 3,440m/ 11,286 ft) Monjo: (2,835m/ 9,300 ft)

We will continue our trek downwards to Monjo. Instead of Namche, we chose Monjo this time so that you can feel the hospitality of yet another village in the Everest Region. Walking side by side along the Dudh Koshi River and crossing the large suspension bridge above might as well back the memories of how we started. We will reach Monjo after they pass all the way through Jorsale.

  • Day 17: Trek from Monjo to Lukla

    Monjo: (2,835m/ 9,300 ft) Phakding: (2,650 m/ 8,562 ft) Lukla: (2,850m/9,350 ft)

Today is the last day of our trek and we will head towards Lukla to fly to Kathmandu the next day. We will trek towards the Hillary Suspension Bridge and along with the pass-through several local villages.

After reaching Phakding, we can take a rest there for some time. Then we will descend towards Lukla for an overnight stay there.

  • Day 18: Fly back to Kathmandu

    Lukla: (2,850m/9,350 ft) Kathmandu (1,300m /4,265 ft)

We will fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla today. This flight sometimes may not be constant because of the difficult weather situations. So we have to wait for the perfect moment.

We can yet again enjoy the view of beautiful mountain ranges and peaks from the flight. If we reach Kathmandu early we will have plenty of time to rest for the whole day. Even if we reach late, there is nothing to worry about as we will have yet another day in Kathmandu for the whole day to rest.

  • Day 19: Rest day at Kathmandu

    Kathmandu (1,300m /4,265 ft)

Looking at your schedule you can plan your free day in Kathmandu. You can spend a productive day by engaging in outdoor activities like cycling, wall climbing, or short hiking (Outdoor-activities-in-Kathmandu).

Everest Base Camp, Lobuche Peak & Island Peak Climbing !!! Sauraj Jhingan Pune, India

Everest Base Camp, Lobuche Peak & Island Peak Climbing !!!

I used Trekkers Paradise to climb Island Peak in 2013, Lobuche in 2015 /2017, and Everest Base Camp trek multiple times. Throughout my trip to Nepal, I found this company to be trustworthy, responsible, and secure. The views of the highest mountains are just breathtaking from the summit of Lobuche & Island peak.  The company provides experienced climbing guides, food, climbing equipment, trekking guide & porters. I anxiously await the next Himalayan expedition, which promises to be a trekkers' paradise and many more to come.

Train Yourself

Qualification/Training

The best physical condition is required to trek in Nepal’s high altitude. Without some pre-trek training or a good level of basic fitness, it can be hard. We suggest running, walking, hiking on the hill, and climbing stairs rather than elevating to prepare for the trek. Include swimming, rowing, and biking in your daily base training.

Basic further experience and strength required for Trekking

  • One should be able to hike for 6-7 hours a day.
  • One should be able to carry 8 kg themselves in a backpack for preparation.
  • We suggest you run about 4/5 miles at home for the preparation with some load on your back for 2 to 3 months to make your climbing much more easier. Or use the treadmill for everyday running and walking.
  • If you have an uphill location/mountain then once a week you should go hiking with a loaded bag pack on your back. If you do not have mountains and high hills then use stairs to go up/down than an elevator.
  • Regular swimming, biking, and rowing are also good ways to maintain your physical strength.
  • Fuel your body well with small but frequent healthy foods and drink plenty of water.
  • Go through a trek grading and know what type of trekking is suitable for you. The treks are graded as easy, moderate, hard, and challenging treks.
  • Go after what you want and what your physical capabilities will allow you to. Do not push too hard yourself. Trekking is not a competition. It is relaxing and rewarding.
  • Walk at a pace you are most comfortable with.  An assistant guide will be always walking at the back of the group so you don’t have to rush to catch up with the faster walkers at the front.
  • Using trekking poles reduces the body and backpack’s weight on the legs and makes walking more easier on inclines.
  • Invest in the comfortable full trekking boot with ankle support and a  sturdy Vibram sole that suit your foot to avoid blisters.

The meals during the trek:

Our trek takes us to high altitudes near the world’s highest point, which means your body will need enough starch, protein, and nutrition, as food is the body’s fuel for hiking on such massive Himalayan trails.

All the meals including breakfasts, lunch, and dinner are served during your stay in Kathmandu and the trekking journey. Usually, breakfast and dinner are served at the same hotel where we stay overnight and lunch is served en route to our destination during the trek.

The services are basic, with some of the popular western, Asian, or Nepalese menus being the most popular and consumed. The most popular and common menu items include the Dal-Bhat set, which consists of rice, lentils, and vegetables, as well as meat, rice, and noodle items, spaghetti, pasta, momo(dumplings), Tibetan bread, chapatti, local tsampa porridge,  potatoes, sandwiches, macaroni dishes, pizza, Sherpa stew, steaks, vegetable curry and so forth.  The Dessert Items  (Rice Pudding, Apple pie), Hard Drinks Steaks, etc.) are available on the menu as well during the trek.

However, you cannot compare them with the choices available in large cities. Usually, local agricultural products are used to prepare meals. Other ingredients are purchased from the market if they cannot grow at a particular elevation.

Breakfast and dinner orders are taken in advance to save time; breakfast orders are taken the night before and dinner orders are taken as soon as you arrive at the teahouse. Depending on your schedule for the day, your typical day will begin. Breakfast is served in your lodge each morning, after which you leave for the next stop. A guide will notify the next tea house or lodge of your arrival each day. Around noon, you’ll stop for lunch at any nearby lodge on the way. You will arrive at your destination shortly after lunch. You can unwind or explore the nearby attractions when you arrive. You will dine around 7 to 8 pm.

At high altitudes, we strongly advise drinking hot liquid drinks in addition to fresh vegetable foods and fruit drinks. Drink plenty of water, not all a once but regularly on a time intervals.

It is best to avoid smoking cigarettes, consuming alcohol, non-vegetarian foods like meat, caffeine-containing foods, hot chocolate, and dairy and cheese products on high-altitude treks. These things increase the chances of getting altitude sickness and diarrhea.

Accommodation details during the Trek:

Rooms are basic, almost every room consisting twin-bedded with two beds with a mattress, a pillow, and blankets. You can share a room with a fellow trekker with whom you feel at ease.

Although, each lodge has its own set of standards, please do not anticipate luxurious accommodations, particularly in the mountains. Most teahouses offer hot showers, boiled drinking water, extra blankets, charging stations, and WIFI for an additional fee. Difficulties during Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake:

  • The trekking trail to the Everest Base Camp gets filthy during Monsoon.
  • Cancellations of flight following bad weather and heavy snowfall
  • Altitude sickness like nausea, breathing difficulties, and headache becomes common
  • High-tech facilities like Wi-fi and ATM gets exorbitant at high lands like Namche Bazar
  • Peak season gives rise to insufficiency of guest house and lodge in Everest
  • Accommodations are of economic with no luxurious items and extra facilities

Safe Drinking Water

The availability of drinking water is not an issue.  Bottled mineral water is available in most places for purchase, but there is no provision to dispose of plastic bottles. We encourage guests to do what they can to protect the environment. We do not recommend purchasing single-use plastic bottles. You can buy or bring your own Nalgene bottles on the trek which makes the trail free from bottles and rubbish.

Filling your water bottles in tea houses is another option for getting drinking water. Several guesthouses have the Euro-guard filters water.  Boiled filter water is also available in tea houses that are completely safe to drink but may be inexpensive for the duration of the trek.

River water is generally full of glaciers and sand and may be contaminated with animal urine and toilet run-off, so do not drink it. The tap water in the lodges is piped from high up, away from rivers and clean glaciers, so it is better, but it still must be treated.

Use iodine drops (3 per liter) locally known as Lugols solution, available at Thamel supermarkets in Kathmandu. The chlorine-based tablets are another choice, but they do transmit a taste to the water. Alternatively, you could purchase a Steripen, which uses UV to kill the bacteria but a bit fragile to carry during the trek.

The best option is the water purification tablet Aquaprove, which uses cutting-edge technology. Most importantly, it works against all pathogens in impure water. It’s light, simple to use, has no taste, and is all-natural.

Waste Management during the trek

Leave No Traces, Only the Footprints! Pack out your own waste. We practice responsible eco-tourism and organize eco-friendly trips to support sustainable tourism.

The trekking trail in Nepal has suffered significant damage as a result of not having a strong policy of waste management. Act and travel responsibly. We prefer that all of our clients bring their trash and keep them in a container or bag, and dispose of it properly at a specific spot or dustbin.

How to avoid acute mountain sickness?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most deadly risk of trekking. Anyone can get a victim of this sickness when their body is exposed to a higher elevation in a short period of time and the body is unable to adapt to the changing atmospheric pressures. As you ascend higher, the oxygen and air pressure decrease. Our bodies are capable of handling the change, but they require time to gradually adapt. If it is not treated in time, it can be severe and result in death. You can take a few preventative measures to avoid it.

  • Not to climb too high too fast.
  • Climb slowly and attain the height gradually.
  • Take it easy and climb at your own comfortable pace.
  • Reduce your walking hours as you reach 2000 meters and walk slowly.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Get plenty of rest. If you feel like your body needs more rest, get it.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.
  • Meditation and warm-up exercise each day before starting the trek.
  • Allow an acclimatization day for every 1000m of elevation gain.

There are two more serious but less common severe forms of altitude sickness. Both have the potential to be fatal. You must descend immediately to receive medical care.

High-altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) causes the lungs to swell with excess fluid, which makes breathing difficult even when at rest. You experience extreme exhaustion, weakness, and perhaps a sense of suffocation. A dry cough, nose breathing, shortness of breath, fever, chest tightness, rapid heart rates, congestion, swelling, and fainting are the symptoms of HAPE.  If HAPE is not promptly treated by lowering the altitude or using oxygen, it can be fatal.

High-altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) is characterized by an accumulation of fluid on the brain that results in swelling. Confusion, poor coordination, and possibly violent behavior could occur. Hallucinations, loss of consciousness, fever and fatigue, photophobia, hypertension, coma, shortness of breath, and inability to walk are some more symptoms of HACE. HACE can result in death if it is not treated immediately.

The early signs of altitude sickness can be relieved by immediately descending. However, if you are experiencing severe acute mountain sickness symptoms, you should see a doctor.

The drug acetazolamide can ease heavy breathing and lessen the effects of altitude sickness. You may also be given the steroid Dexamethasone. But you are never recommended to take such drugs as far as possible until the situation is harsh.
